Team Mallett secures CTRS points to earn berth

A second women’s team has earned a berth for the 2017 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western.

Team Mallett, from Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge, features Marla Mallett (Walnut Grove), a former junior national champion (1988) as skip, Shannon Aleksic (Abbotsford, third) and sisters Brette Richards (Kelowna, second) and Blaine DeJager (Prince George, lead). The team earned their berth by collecting CTRS (Canadian Team Ranking System) points at World Curling Tour events.

The 2017 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship will take place at the Glen Harper Curling Centre, home of the Duncan Curling Club, from January 17-22. The final four games of the event will be televised on Shaw TV on January 21 and 22.

Team Mallett was the top BC women’s team (after Team Thompson, who have a guaranteed berth because they are the defending BC champions) on the nation-wide CTRS list. The last weekend to collect points towards the berth has just passed.

Team Mallett will join the returning champions, Team Thompson of Kamloops, and six other teams who have yet to qualify. Team Thompson is composed of Karla Thompson of Kamloops, Kristen Recksiedler of Coquitlam, Erin Pincott of Kamloops and Trysta Vandale of Port Moody.

There will be two open events to decide the remaining berths, one in Vernon Dec. 2-4 and one in Abbotsford Dec. 16-18. Three teams will qualify at the first event and three teams will qualify at the second.

The event will showcase BC’s top women curlers who will be playing for the opportunity to represent the province at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St Catharines, Ontario, from February 18-26.

The teams taking part in the open events will be showcased on Curl BC’s online scoring site at in the coming days.
